AFPI President Meets with National Medical Commission Officials

September 5, 2024, New Delhi — Dr. Raman Kumar, President of the Academy of Family Physicians of India (AFPI), met with key officials of the National Medical Commission (NMC) to discuss the advancement of primary healthcare and the strengthening of family medicine practice in India. Dr Kumar met with Dr BN Gangadhar, Chairperson of the National Medical Commission and Dr Yogendra Malik, member of the NMC.

During the meeting, Dr. Kumar highlighted the crucial role of family physicians in India's healthcare ecosystem and emphasised the need for more structured training and integration of family medicine in the medical curriculum. The discussions also focused on strategies to improve the accessibility and quality of primary healthcare services across the country

Dr. Kumar expressed AFPI's commitment to supporting the NMC in its efforts to revitalise medical education, especially in promoting family medicine as a specialised discipline under NMC Act 2019. "The future of healthcare in India relies on a strong foundation of primary care. Family physicians are the backbone of this system, and we must continue to work together to enhance their training and practice environments," Dr. Kumar said.

NMC officials assured their support in advancing family medicine and improving the overall healthcare landscape in India. This meeting marks a significant step forward in AFPI’s ongoing advocacy for the recognition and development of family medicine, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of healthcare reforms in India.
